Clare Shilland’s recent shoot was inspired by the early 20th century French painter, Balthus, who was known for his provocative and sexually-charged paintings of adolescent girls. Below are some examples of Balthus’ work.
“The first time I ever saw a Balthus painting was on the cover of a copy of Lolita I got when I was 17. It made a big impression on me. There is something odd about his pictures. I love the peculiar positions his girls are in- sexually overt, and with a look of boredom on their faces, or looking straight at you, blankly, making you feel a little uncomfortable. I like the combination of innocent mood and eroticism, of youth and beauty. I think his paintings are strange and beautiful, and I hope I have conveyed some of that in these pictures.” -CS
